Keanu
Rescue Story
Keanu’s estimated birthday is May 21, 2023, making him about two and a half years old. We adopted him in March 2025 after deciding Sammie could use a companion. I searched through countless shelters, but as soon as I saw Keanu, I knew he was the one. He came from Dorset Rescue Kittens, and the adoption process was smooth and easy thanks to their wonderful team.
Keanu’s story before the shelter is a bit of a mystery. He was rescued from a hoarding situation, already missing one eye (likely lost while fighting with other rabbits). He’d been waiting nearly nine months for a home when we found him. Despite his tough appearance, his sweet personality shone through, and I named him after Canada Treasure Keanu Reeves: strong and gentle, with a soft heart.
Adjusting to Home
When he first came home, Keanu was overweight, tired quickly, and struggled to balance or hop very far. With a healthy diet, gradual exercise, and eventually full access to the house, he grew stronger each day. Within weeks, he was running, leaping onto the bed with ease, and galloping happily around like a horse.
His missing eye hasn’t slowed him down. He simply can’t see from that side and may startle if Sammie suddenly appears there, but otherwise he navigates the world with no problem!
Bond with Sammie
Bonding Keanu and Sammie was a long process, but ultimately successful. They’re not inseparable best friends—more like siblings—but they live together full-time and provide each other with companionship. Keanu clearly adores her and often tries to groom her, even if Sammie isn’t always enthusiastic about it.
Personality
Keanu is everything you’d expect from a domestic bunny: aloof at times, stubborn, excitable, and hilarious. If Sammie is the “working dog” of the pair, Keanu is the lab: friendly, goofy, and affectionate.
He loves cuddles, kisses, and pets, and will often sleep beside my pillow at night, gently licking my arm with his little “slug tongue.” Compared to Sammie’s busy energy, Keanu is softer, more easygoing, but still full of sass and fun.
Favorite Things
Keanu enjoys toys, especially cardboard to chew and toss around. He loves digging in blankets and rearranging them with his paws. He’s also learning a few tricks: recall, giving paw, and waiting politely while I prepare his snuffle mat. He may not pick things up as quickly as Sammie, but he’s eager to please.
Diet & Care
Keanu’s diet is simple but carefully managed:
Fresh salad each morning
Unlimited hay throughout the day
Evening pellets
Occasional treats (used sparingly while working on his fitness)
His litter habits are excellent. He’s never had an accident outside the box. Inside the box, however, he’s delightfully messy, scattering hay and poops everywhere. Compared to Sammie’s pristine box, his looks chaotic, but since it’s all contained, I can’t complain.
Why He’s Special
Keanu is the sweetest, sassiest little bun. Despite his rough start and missing eye, he’s grown into a playful, affectionate companion who fills the house with joy. Sammie may not always return his affection, but Keanu loves her dearly and I couldn’t imagine our home without him.
